After a lot of intense searching, Olaf and I finally found an apartment! Everything happened very fast. On Tuesday I was feeling like the stock of available apartments was infinitesimally small. Our broker told us that the vacancy rate on the Upper West Side is only one percent. The good apartments are scooped up the first day they come to market.
After a few weeks of searching, both in London and here in New York, we didn't see anything that got us excited. Over the weekend Olaf and I walked all the park blocks between West 83rd and West 67th streets, and talked to doormen.
Finally, on Wednesday, a doorman let me into a place that Olaf had seen on the internet. There was a family viewing the apartment when I got there. They were very excited about the apartment and pushing their broker to contact the leasing agent. I took a five second look at the apartment and called the agent and told her we wanted to submit an application. Ten minutes later I sped down there to submit an application before the family. I got it in at 3pm and got a call back 15 minutes later, from the leasing agent who wanted more paperwork. 24 hours later we signed the lease!
Last night I went over and took measurements. Olaf met me there after work and took his first look at our new home. He liked it, thankfully :)
It's a pre-war building with a lot of original features, located on a side street adjacent to Central Park (W 68th). No washer, so we will do like everyone else and have our laundry done at the local cleaners. What an adventure!
Here are a few photos:
Yesterday was also Halloween, so after visiting our new home, Olaf and I walked through some of the nearby streets to check out all the costumes and over the top decorations. A couple of houses had put huge spiders, three foot in diameter, up in trees, attached to a pulley system which would drop the massive creatures right down on top of passersby. We love the community already and can't wait to move-in :)
